  1. Why Management Should Encourage an “Talking” Environment

January 29, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

I returned to work after being sick and for the first few hours of showing up…no one said a word to me. I didn’t get asked about my thoughts on the weather. on how I was feeling, or on what I think about who is in the Super Bowl. Nothing.

I work an environment where talking isn’t exactly encouraged. It makes sense in one way, because the role I play in my company is one that requires you to make few mistakes, if any at all. When you make mistakes, the shit hits the fan.At least, that’s how it feels.

The environment where I sit includes two coworkers in my department who wear headphones all day, and two on the other side of my cubicle wall, who aren’t in my department, who swear and talk trash while they work. This doesn’t bring out my “sharing” side.

The other people in my department never come by my desk to chat, and I rarely chat in the break room with them. Simply because I either never see them (most sit on the other side of the room) or their response is so awkward I don’t find that usual chit chat as fun anymore.

The reality is…when I’ve been at a job where I can talk and joke with coworkers, I am happier. Even if I talk only a little bit. Because then I’m more connected to who I work around and suddenly, it becomes less about being a machine going in, and more about being a person too.

Management should encourage a “talking” environment. Relate with your employees and encourage relations between them. Set up seating arrangements so people can talk to others in their department. Limit the amount of emails sent and eliminate internet messenger for employees all together. Encourage actual talking. It will make for better employees and coworkers in the long run.

  2. Monday Work Rant – What’s Bugging You Today?

January 28, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

    Another Sign of The Times

    It’s Hell Being Sick

Unfortunately, I’m home again yet another Monday. Instead of having the day off, though, I’m sick. Like, actually sick. Not fake coughing sick. But sick sick.

How come it’s even worse saying home when you are not playing hooky and you don’t have the day off?

I’m certain one of my gross coworkers got me sick. The office has been like a quarantine these days and I’ve been working on the ill side.

But that doesn’t mean that you guys aren’t having a crappy day at work! So, tell me your rant today. What’s bugging you? Did someone cut you off? Did you get in trouble already this morning?  I want to know. Let me know in the comments what your rant is and we’ll commiserate together!

  3. Can We Become Uncynical?

January 26, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

JJ's Melt Nana's Heart and Pick Me Up Face

I’m back at this unhappy thing again.

Today I had an awful day.

Bad day aside, I can’t help but ask this question. I’ve not really ever had an easy time, to be honest. I’ve had monster family issues that came around when I was an early teen, a difficult childhood, and close family members who had their own nightmare before I was even born. I haven’t exactly had the easiest time.

At the same time, I don’t want to be cynical. I feel myself getting there, of course. In the back of my mind today, I thought…should I just learn to suck up these awful experiences I have throughout the day? I think that’s where cynical people start…it’s this thought that this is all we have and there is no way out. And that’s when the scowl deepens. The frown lines and the sadness hardens.

Can you become uncynical? Is that possible?

  4. Can You (Or Should You) Trust Your Coworkers?

January 23, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

It’s funny. Last week my company held a meeting about the importance of trust within a department.

I clearly struggled to avoid rolling my eyes during this meeting. These days I wouldn’t trust my coworkers to spit on me if I caught on fire.

But I asked myself…have I ever trusted coworkers? What does trust mean?

I do trust my family. I trust that they will not purposely hurt me. That if they do hurt my feelings, that it was not intentional. That they would not want to purposely hurt me, embarrass, humiliate, undermine me. That I can trust them with my wishes, dreams, feelings. To me, that is trust.

There is no amount of money in this Universe to have me feel that type of trust for my coworkers.

But do I trust them at all? Maybe in some ways. I trust that they won’t throw tomatoes when I walk in the door. That I won’t get stabbed in the break room by a difficult coworker. That they won’t push me to the floor when I walk around.

    Those things I trust.

I trust they will also talk behind my back, undermine, sneak, and cut me down. I trust that mistakes will be overblown and no one will have each others back.

But is there any other way to feel? Maybe. I just don’t think I’ve found it yet.

How about you? Do you trust your coworkers? Have you ever?

  5. Monday Work Rant – What’s Your Rant Today?

January 21, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

Welcome back to Monday Work Rant where you can b*tch and complain about your rancid Monday.

To be honest though, I am hosting today’s rant from the comfort of my home. I do have the day off…but it doesn’t make your day any less crappy, so share with me your gripes, complains, wounds, and daily struggles. I want to hear it, because Monday just sucks (unless you have the day off…like me).

    What’s your Monday work rant?

  6. Learn to Choose Your Battles at Work

January 16, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

This lesson is a tough one for me.

I struggle with being a people pleaser, so whenever I ignore a wrongdoing (even if it is just me believing it), I feel like that is one step backwards away from my personal growth. Yet, this struggle is why I can be (between you and me) a bit difficult to work with at times.

    pointing-finger

Yesterday at work there was an instance where I felt certain that I was getting blamed for a mistake I know I didn’t do. It was only partially my fault, at least. The other person just never responded to me (I do feel I needed to follow through but didn’t). Yet, the other person who never responded was the one who pointed fingers. Worse yet, I was told my “mistake” by my difficult coworker. So I had no chance of explaining my perception and what happened to anyone who was actually involved. Worse is the fact the person who was involved, was out that day I was told.

    So what do I do?

If I ignore it, I feel like that is giving them permission to continue blaming me for their mistakes and for them to make mine an even bigger deal, as a result. If I say something, now that a day has gone by, it’s suddenly an issue. It’s become more than a mistake, because I’m suddenly a difficult person who won’t accept it when they’ve done wrong.

So I’ve chosen my battle. I will let it go. It isn’t my favorite thing to do, but…I think choosing your battles at work is the key to maintaining your sanity.

What do you think? How do you know which battles to take on?

  7. Monday Work Rant – Come Gripe With Me

January 14, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

I wrote this in advance today because I wanted to make sure the post came out on time (especially since if I am having a bad day today, my head is somewhere else).

Like I said last week, Monday’a are the worst. Which means it is the best time to rant.

What’s your rant today? Did someone cut you down? Undermine your authority? Acted like you didn’t exist? Yell at you?

Anything, I want to hear it.

    What is your Monday rant?

  8. Finally Friday! Let’s Bring the Happy!

January 11, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

In honor of today being the best day ever invented, let’s sing a song (and dance; you better dance):

Whew, we’ll folks we made it.

Now, I plan on having a weekly Friday post filled with stuff that will bring the happy.

    First on the list…

    Somewhere to Escape This Weekend

As if I have the money to travel…but if I did I would want to go to this Cedar Creek Tree House hotel in Washington.

Check out the photos of your living arrangements:

These are photos from their web page and holy crap people…let me just say that while I would have a slight fear of bugs and heights rolling around in my head, I would enjoy myself to all ends.

The bigger question though…can I choose how I get down? I would be torn between a fireman’s pole or the Tarzan rope swing.

    Something to Drink

Friday wouldn’t be Friday without a happy hour and I don’t know about you, but most days I love my happy hour at home.

And now, I shall reveal my mom’s fantastic margarita recipe. Yes, my mom makes the best…here’s what you need:

    4 Ounces of Lime Juice
    4 Ounces of Triple Sec
12 Ounces of Jose Cuervo Tequila
    Ice
Optional: Mini Bottle of Grand Mariner

Put all ingredients in a blender.

    Uh, blend.

    Serves up to…four-ish people?

Have a fantastic weekend everyone and make sure to come by again on Monday for my weekly work rant! What brings the happy for you this weekend?

  9. Should We Stay at a Job that Makes us Unhappy?

January 10, 2013 by Lady Unemployed

I know that in this economy, you are lucky to have anything. That we should take anything, including taking grief at work no matter what, because few people will have sympathy for you if you just leave.

But is that the healthiest thing to do? Should we stick it out whether or not we are unhappy? Is that any way to live our lives?

This question was rolling around in my brain as I was thinking about my own situation. So much time can go by without anything changing and unhappiness setting in like a heavy weight.

I know, I know. Look for a job while you have one. But it isn’t that easy. We get complacent. We get used to routine and as miserable as we are, it feels safe and comforting knowing we haven’t rocked the boat and we have met our expectations.

What do you think? Stick it out? Take a risk and try to get out of the grind?
