Since my day job is content marketing, and I also help promote lifestyle brands in my freelance work (writing and PR), I wanted to start a monthly feature that shares content ideas for your business or blog. Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list. However, I know the biggest hurdle for me is simply thinking of ideas! So, hopefully, this list helps you.
For May 2023, consider these themes:
Wedding Season
It’s wedding season! There are a ton of themes you can write about within this umbrella. Even if you don’t work exclusively within this industry, you can use this popular theme for May. For example:
- If you clean homes, do interior design, or work as a professional organizer, consider a post about preparing your home for guests. You could focus on preparing for a small ceremony inside the home or getting it ready for guests staying inside the home.
- If your brand focuses on skincare products or makeup, write posts focusing on preparing skin in advance of the day, makeup tips for brides on a budget, or gifts for the wedding party.
- If you are a financing company, consider posts about saving for the wedding or any part of the ceremony. Consider budget-friendly tips for any events before, during, or after the wedding (i.e. honeymoon!).
- If you sell products or services of any kind, consider using those as an angle for gift ideas. Don’t make it too sales-y, though! Remember, you want someone to find your content naturally and not be hit with something that reads like an ad. For example, maybe you want to promote your lotion as a bridesmaid gift. Consider sharing tips on wrapping the gift, or one that focuses on ingredients good for the skin during warmer months.
- If you have a mental health or physical health focus on your business, consider talking about how to be mentally and physically prepared for a lot of wedding activities or getting into shape in preparation for the big day.
So, tons of content ideas around this theme! I could go on and on, of course. Now, onto the next:
Mental Health
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s an ideal time to focus on mental health tips, especially if that is the focus of your brand. Remember, people can tell when a brand is phoning it in, so don’t feel you have to have content on this subject if it doesn’t really apply to you and your brand messaging.
Consider these angles:
- Tips related to the specific area of your business. For example, minimal ways to clean if you are under a great deal of stress. Or focus on the mental health benefits of getting organized (or how mental health can impact the desire to be organized).
- Budget-friendly tips to boost your mood or relieve mental health. This is a great topic for more local brands or services. Consider focusing on what’s near you if it is suitable to your brand or service.
- Ways to make life easier, less stressful, and streamlined; consider specific tasks you can talk about making easier (i.e. waking up in the morning, cleaning a room, etc).
- Consider talking about how to support a friend or family member or loved one with mental health issues
- Share workplace mental health awareness tips, such as how to support coworkers or make a workplace more open about mental health.
- Breathing techniques or stretching exercises can relieve stress. It’s a great opportunity to share services related to mental health or products people can use in the midst of these exercises.
Cinco De Mayo
Obviously, this is a fun one for brands! I loved this article that basically helps relieve the pressure of being overly politically correct for this day. It’s on May 5th, which is a Friday this year.
If you are in the realm of foodie or alcohol brands, this is a great day for you. Consider crafting a recipe specifically for this day.
Anyone else, you may consider focusing on at-home celebration tips, such as decoration choices, or ways to celebrate with kids (or neighbors or coworkers). Maybe share ways to make it a nutritionally healthy celebration as much as possible. If you have a brick-and-mortar or regional vibe to your business, consider promoting any local events. Tagging other businesses on social media is a great way to make friends with your nearby peeps.
Mother’s Day
This is another great one for brands! Remember, it’s on Sunday May 14th this year. There is a lot of competition around holidays, so here are a few things to consider:
- Budget-friendly/Affordable gifts for Mom
- Crafts to do with your kids to help celebrate mother’s day
- Local events to do on mother’s day (if you have a brick-and-mortar business or service, do a shout out of events or businesses in the area)
- Tips for what to say on a mother’s day card (great post if you are in the mental health field, such as a psychologist or counselor, work as a life coach, or write for a living in some way)
- Tips for mother’s day for those who have dealt with loss (such as tips for loved ones of a mom who lost a child, someone who lost their mom, etc); or a tips for a single mom on that day or an empty nester
- Decor/organization/cleaning tips to get ready to celebrate the day at home
- Funny/inspiring/heartfelt quotes about moms
- Consider posts that focus on non-traditional moms, such as foster moms, step-moms, grandmothers, etc.
- Obviously, gift ideas are a great topic but consider showcasing how it can problem solve or address a need to stand out above the noise during this time of year
- Sharing sales is always a great item to promote this time of year
Memorial Day
Memorial Day is on Monday, May 29th this year. For many people, this is a day that is the unofficial start of summer. Lots of barbecues, local events, sales, and a long weekend. However, it’s easy to forget the meaning behind this day. Keep in mind that it’s a day in remembrance of people who lost their lives serving our country.
I liked these dos and donts here:
https://theelitesuite.com/posting-memorial-day-content/
A few easy tips:
- Be sure you are recognizing those who have lost their lives serving our country. That is the purpose of Memorial Day.
- Include any changes to your schedule and mention specific discounts. Avoid saying “happy memorial day” (which is a tip I’ve seen at more than one place)
Other content ideas:
- Share a few quotes around Memorial Day.
- If you personally have lost a family member who was a service member, and you are comfortable, consider sharing a remembrance of the person you lost. Not only is it appropriate, but it connects your customers to you in a way that may surprise you.
Also, feel free to skip sharing anything. And most of all, try to avoid anything that is sales related because it may not sit well with people. I know ads and commercials this time of year tend to say otherwise, but it’s a good rule of thumb.
Gardening and Spring Related
Even though March 21st is the first day of spring, May really catches the spring vibe. Or maybe it’s just me thinking of the whole “April showers, bring May flowers” rhyme. Who knows! It’s a great time of year to discuss the floral side of life.
Obviously, if you have a gardening or florists company, this is a time to shine! What is a good thing to plant this time of year? Talk about that.
Consider specific topics like:
- DIY gardens for small balconies
- Craft-related ideas for the outdoors, such as creating bird feeders or wind chimes
- Flowers that make great gifts.
- Consider any kind how to guide for beginners, whether it’s a DIY vegetable garden or specifics on growing certain types of plants.
- Talk about produce that is plentiful this time of year and how it helps your body. Consider talking about why buying local is friendly to your budget.
Festival Season
We are also now in festival season. Lots of people will be planning on going to outdoor events soon. Even though we have moved beyond COVID a bit, there still are safety issues in our society. So, consider a safety focus in your content if it’s relevant to your brand. This is also an opportunity to talk about it from a mental health perspective.
Also, content around what to pack is great! Again, be specific. What to take that fits into a small pack, what to take for a day trip, weeklong trip. if you live somewhere a popular festival takes place, share insider tips!
For all you physical fitness people, consider tips around how to get physically ready for festival Season. What exercises can someone do in preparation? You may also want to share tips for sore muscles at the end of the day.
I know this only scratches the surface of ideas, but I hope this gets you started! Visit NationalToday.com for more ideas for May content. I like using the holidays they list. Even if I don’t specify them directly, it’s a great brainstorming tool.
